안녕하세요~! 얼마 전 유튜브를 보다가 영국남자 채널에서 영국인들을 대상으로 한국 수능을 치게 하는 영상을 봤어요. 분명히 원어민인 영국인들한테 시험을 보게 했는데도 다들 문제를 못 맞추더라구요 ㅠ 이런 걸 보면 한국의 시험이라는 게 참 ㅠ 댓글 중에 신기했던 거 몇 가지를 번역해 왔어요. 보시죠.

한국 친구들, 저 영어 시험은 그냥 단어들의 토사물이야. 이런 시험을 봐야 하다니 정말 안타깝네.

누가 한국 교육 담당자들한테 좀 말해줘. 영어 원어민들도 매일 고급 문법을 쓰면서 살진 않는다고 말야. 

 

My girlfriend who is Korean often asks me to check her writing when she has to write an email in English. I find she writes in an overly convoluted way, often incorrectly using pedantic words you'd only hear in academia and not in the real world. Now I'm thinking this is probably why.

내 한국인 여자친구는 이메일 써야 될 때마다 자주 나한테 자기가 쓴 글을 검사해달라고 부탁하곤 해. 종종 그녀가 현실에서는 전혀 안 쓰고 학문 세계에서나 쓸 법한 단어들로 너무 난해하게 글을 쓰거나, 현학적인 단어들을 쓰곤 하더라고. 내 생각엔 이게 그 원인인 것 같아.

"이건 너가 정말 똑똑하냐를 테스트 하는 게 아니라, 얼마나 시스템에 잘 적응하느냐를 테스트하는거죠." 나도 동의해.

이게 한국인들이 영어를 말하지도, 이해하지도 못하는 이유야. 

 

As someone who works in a Korean high school let me just explain. Korean students don't really learn how to speak and understand English. What they learn is actually just memorising paragraphs and basically just spotting the difference between what they've memorised (which is correct) and what is on their test. They don't actually understand what is being said, they rarely do. 

한국 고등학교에서 일하는 사람으로서 말해줄게. 한국 학생들은 실제로 영어를 어떻게 말하고 이해하는지에 대해서는 배우지 않아. 걔들이 배우는 건 그냥 문장을 암기하고 외운것 하고 다른 걸 찾는 것 뿐이야. 보통 걔들은 실제로 무슨 내용인지에 대해서는 이해를 하지 못해.
